This volume is the result of more than thirty years research, involving the many people, institutions, documents, books and records listed in the contents.

At date of publication presents the most up to date history of all those vessels of the Confederate States Navy, proposed, planned, started, not finished, and completed that had iron plating protection in one form or another.

So far as is possible each one has a plan or plans to scale showing its’ evolution.

The author, John Wallis, is a ship modeler, former naval wargamer, amateur naval historian, who after a thirty-eight year career in The Post office and Royal Mail now lives in retirement in Kent England. He is a member of the International Naval research Organisation and the internet based Civil War Talk Forum as well as several Facebook Groups dedicated warships of the nineteenth century.

He is also a long time Heritage railway volunteer and continues to follow that interest in retirement. He has one son who drives on one of the heritage railways.

Thank you Steve S for that helpful review. My book contains accurate information, as opposed to received and repeated wisdom, about all the vessels described in a format that modellers and wargamers can use at a reasonable purchase price. I could have had it printed as a coffee table volume at, according to two well known publishers at around £40, but who amongst you would a) want to pay that price and b) bend and abuse such a book to scan the drawings? .

236 pages, illustrations of each ship are line drawings by the author and some period drawings and photos reproduced, not colorful but are to scale, show the waterline of vessel, they are adequate for most wargamer's or modeler's needs. Not a picture book, a research work. Each ship, including European built ships that were never delivered and ships that were never completed domestically, each have their own page or pages with all specs and brief history, modifications and engagements if any. Index, contents, bibliography and lists of organizations and individuals who supplied information are included.

Thanks! I googled the author and subject, and came across some drawings and explanatory text. Seems quite decent actually.

I agree with Kipton - before I spend 19.47 I'd like some more info. It does look interesting.

I'm interested in this book, but for a suggested $19.53 I'd like to know the number of pages, number and quality of illustrations, a table of contents, and whether there is a bibliography. Also, are the ships presented in tables of info, or is there a more narrative aspect to them. A preview would be of great use here.

It is a suggested price. Get it and then return to this page after you have looked at it and pay the author what you think it is worth!

The book IS the preview.

BTW: the book is 236 pages long, including a good index and a great list of sources.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
